Changes During the Seasons

Spring (April - early June), Weather Permitting, Yellowstone National park roads open to cars beginning April 19. See the newborn baby Bison romp and play in mid-April through May. Animals are more easily seen against the white snow. If there is still a lot of snow, the Bison and Elk will use the Yellowstone park roads for easy to travel routes or may be lying on the road to stay warm. The Yellowstone waterfalls can still have a white icy outline. Back at the Log home, in May, baby goslings and ducklings enjoy eating the grass between the house and the lake. It is a great time to spot a Golden eagle and the short tailed weasel. Later in the spring, a thunderstorm may go by, providing an exciting rain shower and a beautiful rainbow. Watch the sky to see the northbound migration of the Trumpeter swans and Canadian geese. For more details see: http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/hours.htm
Summer (June - August), This is peak season for West Yellowstone and Yellowstone National Park. The two musical theaters and the small rodeo are in full operation. In July, the bison are in rut, so the cows will be chased around by bellowing dust covered bulls. Don't be surprised when the cows hide behind cars for a needed break. Also during July, fishermen wait for the prized salmon fly hatch to surprise a trout in the Henry's fork of the Snake River. In summer, it is common to see Antelope in the lowland grassy fields. You will appreciate returning to the tranquility of the Log home, as the town of West Yellowstone and Yellowstone National Park can be quite busy. Watch the local mountainsides near the house with a good pair of binoculars to see Elk.
Fall (September - October), Once the red Fireweed blossoms open at the very top of the stock, Fall has come. See the aspen trees leaves change from green to yellow and orange. Early high altitude snow storms will coat the peaks with white dusting, so scenic views take on a multicolored tapestry. The large animals who have enjoyed grazing at the higher elevations, now are forced down to lower altitudes. The Elk are now in rut with the bulls making their eerie bugling sounds to attract a mate. Back at the Log home, watch the sky to see the southbound migration of the Trumpeter swans and Canadian geese. Also keep a look out for those deer, elk, and moose heading for lower elevations.
